Somebody decided at some point that game nights happen at night. Mahjong never got the memo. The classic mahjong party is a Saturday afternoon: sunlight, snacks, four friends around a table, tiles clicking for three hours. This guide covers the whole production: setup, invitations, decorations, drinks, food, music, and favors.

The guest list
Four players is the game. Five is the party. With five, one person sits out each round, keeps score, refreshes drinks, and rotates in. Nobody waits long, and the odd player out becomes the designated snack steward, which is a role people fight over.

The table

The East Wind (cocktail, serves 1)
- 2 oz gin or vodka
- 3/4 oz elderflower liqueur
- 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
- 3 oz soda water
- Lemon twist and a mint sprig
Shake the first three with ice, strain over fresh ice, top with soda. Floral, bright, dangerously easy to drink at 2pm.
Joker's Wild (mocktail, serves 1)
- 3 oz pineapple juice
- 2 oz coconut water
- 1/2 oz fresh lime juice
- Splash of soda water
- Lime wheel
Build over ice, stir gently. Tastes like a vacation and keeps everyone sharp for the tiles.
The batch option: a big pitcher of iced green tea with lemonade and mint covers the whole afternoon for almost nothing. Refill it once and call it done.
Food
One non-negotiable rule of mahjong catering: nothing greasy. Oily fingers and tiles are mortal enemies. Everything below can be eaten with clean hands.
Cucumber tea sandwiches. White bread, cream cheese with dill and lemon zest, thin cucumber slices, crusts off, cut into triangles. Make fifty. They will vanish.
Caprese skewers. Cherry tomatoes, small mozzarella balls, basil leaves on short skewers, drizzle of balsamic glaze. No plates needed.
Edamame with flaky salt. Boil or steam frozen edamame five minutes, toss with flaky sea salt while hot. Salty, snackable, thematically on point.
The playlist

Hosting tips from the trenches
Teach before the party, not during. The beginner's guide goes out with the invitation. The first fifteen minutes at the table are a practice round, openly, with the training wheels on.
Let the fifth player deal with disputes. Every table needs a benevolent dictator for joker arguments. The rotating fifth player is perfect: no stake in the round, full authority.
Two to three hours is the sweet spot. Four full games, a snack break, done before dinner. Mahjong expands to fill all available time if you let it.
